Free Willy 2: The Adventure Home, at area theaters, is rated PG. For all of that, "Free Willy 2" still feels shallow, like "Flipper" with a plankton addiction. Unfortunately, the screenplay is strangling on its many themes, which explore family values for wet and dry mammals, the need to restrict single-hull tankers from sensitive environmental areas, the animistic beliefs of the Native American peoples and so on. He also exposes the sweet awkwardness in the puppy love scenes. And with help from the courageous Nadine, the clever Elvis and other nature lovers, Jesse fights against time, tide and oily executives in the film's surprisingly energetic finale.ĭwight Little, who replaces Simon Wincer in the director's chair, has a flair for getting the most out of the action sequences. But Jesse, who has yet to get over losing his mother, is not about to let the same thing happen to his wet brethren. Then they join the whales in a lengthy underwater ballet that recalls a PG version of "Blue Lagoon."Įventually, both the thin plot and the seawater thicken when an oil tanker runs aground and the resulting spill threatens to separate the orcan family. Willy performs tricks at Jesse's command, and Jesse shows off for Nadine. This leads to many splashy rendezvous between the kids and the whales. The three are out whale-watching off the coast of Washington state when they spot Willy - his drooping dorsal is a dead give-away - cavorting with Ma Willy and his wee siblings. Little Elvis's tendency to tag along also gets in the way of Jesse's pursuit of Nadine (Mary Kate Schellhardt), the niece of Randolph (August Schellenberg), the Native American who befriended Jesse in the original "Willy." Jesse, both jealous and resentful, shuns the eager 8-year-old's attempts to make friends. As if that weren't enough, he discovers that he has a younger half brother, Elvis (Francis Capra), who is joining the family outing. First, he learns that his drug-addicted birth mother has died. Now a typical 14-year-old, Jesse is bummed when his camping trip with his foster parents (Michael Madsen and Jayne Atkinson) gets off to a rocky start.

Except for the stock footage - enough for an entire National Geographic series photographed and narrated by Robert Kincaid - there are no real orcas. Not only did the moviemakers order a new Willy to replace the ailing Keiko, they've also come up with Moby Muppets to portray his born-free family. Unlike his former co-star, Keiko, who has been replaced by an animatronic stand-in, Jason James Richter reprises the role of Jesse, the troubled youth who bonded with the captive orca in "Free Willy." That film was the sleeper hit of the summer of '93, but the sequel promises to be a hit with people who want to get some sleep. "Free Willy 2: The Adventure Home" is no tale of a whale, but a fishy fiction.
